Audio Placebo Plaza – Montreal

/Undefine Radio presents a series of radio interventions under the theme of “Bodies in Resonance / Corps Résonants”.

Co-curated by Martín Rodríguez and Emmanuel Madan, this series enlists three successive artist groups to make performances, installations, and engage with the public through the storefront at 6835 Rue Saint-Hubert from June 4 to 22 in Partnership with Suoni per il Popolo and CKUT.

June 11-17: Audio Placebo Plaza

Sound artists Erin Gee and Julia E Dyck transform a former perfume shop vitrine into a DIY audio placebo and online radio centre. For one week only they offer everyday people customized positive messages, audio creations, healing frequencies, binaural beats, and ASMR. They are responding to the needs of the community through a practice of radical sonic care.

Can placebos help?
Does sound have the power to process complex emotions?
Can music give you what you need?
Is this even music?

My ASMRtronica work We as Waves (2021) is part of the 2021 Recto VRso festival

For its upcoming edition, Recto VRso reinvents itself and reshapes its format by combining a virtual exhibition and a restitution in the physical world. The 4th edition of the international digital art festival Recto VRso will take place online from 14th to 16th April 2021 in the virtual world of Laval Virtual World. A second part of the festival will be organized in a physical space from 7th to 11th July 2021 during the international exhibition Laval Virtual.

My electronic music in ASMRtronica – To the Farther (2020) and a preview of new work We as Waves (2021) will be featured in MUTEK Barcelona / MUTEK Argentina : Hybrid Edition 2021.

As part of this edition I was invited to speak at the MUTEK ES/AR symposium “A future without gender” April 21-22. The title of my presentation is Unnatural Emotion: ASMR as feminist gesture in electronic music.

FESTIVAL DELAYED DUE TO COVID19 – FEBRUARY 2021

In a very exciting presentation, the Centro de Cultura Digital in Mexico City will be presenting the most ambitious version of telematic artwork Presence (2020, Erin Gee and Jen Kutler) to date.

Telematic sound performance

Presence is a telematic sound work where two networked performers (Gee and Kutler) send and receive each other’s heart, sweat and respiration data from Canada and the USA, which in turn triggers strong electronic pulses in devices across their skin in response to one another. The two performers listen to a whispered roleplay of verbal suggestions on the topic of impossible and imaginary touch as music is generated live from their embodied reactions in live feedback over the network.

Video and audio livestream will be received at CCD in Mexico City, where a subject will also receive the live electric pulse signals from Jen and Erin’s bodies on both arms.

To the Farther (2020) ASMRtronica sound work is featured as part of Noviembre Electrónico in Buenos Aires, Argentina as part of a showcase of artistic work from the 2020 cohort of Amplify D.A.I.

ABOUT THE EVENT

November Electrónico is the main event for digital and electronic culture in the City of Buenos Aires, which crosses art and science with the alternative world of video games, virtual and augmented reality, and electronic and expanded music.

In this ninth edition, more than 200 artists, developers, researchers and scientists will propose workshops, exhibitions, concerts, workshops, performances, keynote talks, conferences, screenings and many more experiences.

All activities are free and those of a virtual nature will be available at www.noviembreelectronico.elculturalsanmartin.org and at Vivamos Cultura. On the other hand, face-to-face activities in the open air can be enjoyed in the Plaza seca and in the Plaza de las Américas of El Cultural (Sarmiento 1551) from Thursday 26 to Saturday 28, between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., and require prior registration as indicated in the health protocol.

Each Electronic November is a path towards the convergence between culture, science and technology, which expresses the innovative identity of El Cultural San Martín and explores the construction of new audiences.

Since 2012, more than 130 thousand visitors have shared samples, workshops, performances and all kinds of interactive activities, with virtual and augmented reality, electronic music, visualizations and mapping, robots, video games, digital and 3D manufacturing, drones and programming languages.

November Electrónico has the support of the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, the Fundación Banco Ciudad, Fundación Williams, Empower Communities, Cultural Participation Patronage, the British Council, the French Institute, Pro-Helvetia, the Galileo Galilei Planetarium, Centro of Experimentation and Research in Electronic Arts – IIAC – National University of Tres de Febrero, Understanding Visual Music – UVM, National University of San Martín, Object a, FUNDAV.

Digital Cultures Festival: October 17-25, 2020

Organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the Digital Cultures Festival acts as an international platform for meetings between digital culture professionals and enthusiasts.

It will challenge the notions of what it means to be given guidance by something “or someone” or a release from the monotony of the current day-to-day conventional series of events.

A programme aimed at being tailored to the user’s personal needs, whether in a solitary state indoors or experiencing the sensations of the outdoors in tranquility.

L.E.V. (Laboratorio de Electrónica Visual) is a platform specialized in the production and promotion of electronic sound creations, and its relationship with visual arts. It was a European pioneer in this field, and since more than 13 years ago, it tries to converge the natural synergy between image and sound, and the new artistic trends, making special emphasis on live actions.

LEV develops the L.E.V. Festival (in Gijón) and specific, delocalized shows called LEVents. Through both proceedings, the platform reaches its goal: to provide an eclectic, panoramic vision of the current state of creation and all its connections, in an ever-evolving environment. That is why LEV focalizes its work both on international artists that are leaders in audiovisual creativity and local artists, both pioneers and new talents.

This exhibition premieres my newest project: “To the Farther” (2020) is a song that combines the aesthetics of ASMR with electronic music. This is part of my ongoing project to produce an ASMRtronica album. My participation in this exhibition as part of the 2020 Amplify D.A.I. cohort – AMPLIFY D.A.I is an initiative of the British Council in partnership with MUTEK Montréal, MUTEK Buenos Aires and Somerset House Studios in the UK. The programme is supported by Canada Council for the Arts and Fundación Williams.

“An arcade is an architectural structure of arches and passageways, a place to walk through and to meet, and it is also reminiscent of the video gaming arcades of the 1980s. During these past months in confinement, as we were all homebound, sitting endlessly in front of our screens, we built complex gathering networks through the myriad platforms available to us. Drawing from a new experience of a distance that brings us closer, this exhibition brings together 26 artworks from Québec, Canada and around the world created with a wide range of technologies, from volumetric capture to 16 mm film, 3D animation and neural networks. Presented alongside each other in this digital arcade, they are a testament to how art has the agency to transform unforeseen circumstances into moments of encounter, activism and knowledge-sharing.”

I was invited to contribute my video work Machine Unlearning (2020) as a part of the Dyscorpia 2.1 online exhibition

DYSCORPIA 2.1 is an online exhibition that responds to ideas of THE BODY AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE TIME OF COVID – 19 organized by Marilene Oliver at the University of Alberta.

DYSCORPIA is a project conceived and developed by a core team of researchers at the University of Alberta that came together to share their research and ideas about future of the body and technology. Together, they coined the term DYSCORPIA to describe the uncanny feeling we are increasingly subjected to as are called to relearn to use our bodies are a result of new digital technologies such as smart phones, automated cars, contemporary medical devices and digital assistants such as Siri and Alexa. This led to a series of collaborations and interdisciplinary projects that are central to the Dyscorpia exhibition.

Review of solo exhibition – Canadian Art

“To the Sooe” is my first solo exhibition in a major Canadian institution, curated by Tak Pham at the MacKenzie Art Gallery . I am happy to announce the exhibition was recently reviewed by artist and curator Lauren Fournier and published in Canadian Art. This is my first solo exhibition in a major Canadian institution and I am thrilled by the positive response from critics. The exhibition closed early due to COVID-19, which is noted elegantly by the reviewer:

“Erin Gee’s “To The Sooe” reflects on the valences of emotional life in a post-internet world, gesturing to the many resonances between humans and machines in a time when the humanity of algorithms, data and screens might seem at odds with the complexities of feeling. Having visited the exhibition just weeks before the gallery’s temporary closure due to COVID-19 physical distancing measures, I am now struck by how prescient the work is in this moment of quarantine and self-isolation, when, for most of us, our primary means of communication, intimacy, and connection with others is through technology.”- Lauren Fournier
