Erin Gee
Erin Gee is a multidisciplinary artist, composer, and academic based in Montreal, Canada. Her work in digital media and sound is inspired by the human voice in electronic bodies, or conversely, electronic voices in human bodies. Conceptually adapting the vibrations of the throat to the way that signals are channeled across data systems, or the way emotion infects a room, Gee is a DIY-expert in code, interactive systems, and digital musical instruments grounded in emotional biofeedback. Her artworks and performances have been exhibited internationally in new music festivals, new media exhibitions, art museums, and DIY artist spaces.
In 2024 she was appointed as professeure adjointe (Assistant Professor) in the Faculty of Music at Université de Montréal. She is currently accepting graduate students for Masters and Doctoral research in Music.
Her research paper on feminist methods for designing biofeedback instruments was awarded the best paper prize at NIME 2023, and her open-source librairies for incorporating physiological markers of emotion into technology can be found here. If you would like to read more, her work has been featured in The Wire, VICE, Canadian Art magazine, Neural.it, and Scientific American Blog. Current research includes alternative biofeedback music histories, physiological correlates with ASMR, and ambivalent sincerity based in what she calls “pseudo New-Age” practice.
